MAY 2010 Newsletter

I am torn every May. In one case, I am certain to miss all of the students who have worked so hard over the years and will not be returning in the fall. In another case, I am sure to have to repeat many of the things I have taught, especially in areas of behavior, rule following, and community building after the three month layoff. But then comes the most important case. SCHOOL IS OUT FOR SUMMER!!! Everyone loves a good vacation, and I am no different. Summer gives me a chance to work outside, spend time with the children, and nurture my soul for the impending ninth month marathon that is the school year.

We are not ready for break, though. We have a huge class trip, a tearful graduation, and other activities to wrap up our school year. So even though we can smell the sunscreen and taste the lemonade, it is imperative that we remain focused for the final month of the year.

CLASS NEWS AND NOTES
The spring fling is this weekend, and it gets better each and every year. The event begins at 1:00, and it lasts until 4:30. If your family has any free time on Sunday, I highly suggest you try and spend a little of it with us. It will be a Forest Park in Noblesville.

The class trip is almost here, and you would not believe how excited I am about this. I have been to all of the other places we have visited, but Washington, DC is like a foreign country to me. I have only seen it via pictures and television. It was a lot of hard work, but I think we got the costs down below reasonable. You will get the final amounts NEXT WEEK!!!!!

Elementary graduation is slated for the day after the trip, so I would really like all of the students to make it to school that Friday. Sure they will be tired, but I would like them to support their friends. There will not be a lot of academics, and there will be a lot of fun, so if possible, please encourage them to come happily to school on Friday, the 21st.
Summer Reading will take place again this summer, and like last year, I want the book choices to be that of parent and child. There were many less complaints from the kids, and their parents lost much less hair in the process. The students will follow the fiction rubric to fill out their book reports.

Suggested reading for parents, Optimum Nutrition for Your Child’s Mind by Patrick Holford and Deborah Colson. “This evidence- based guide will show you how to choose the right foods (and avoid the wrong ones) to optimize your child’s mental and emotional well-being. Nutritional authorities Patrick Holford and Deborah Colson have worked with hundreds of children - with problems ranging from ADHD and aggression to autism- and have advised schools on using nutrition to improve attention and classroom conduct. Here they use scientific studies to explain the physiological effects certain nutrients have on the way children think and act. They will show you what to feed your child and what supplements to use to:

  • Develop concentration and focus
  • Enhance memory
  • Boost IQ
  • Improve mood and behavior
  • Strengthen reading and writing

You will learn tips for preparing concentration-sustaining breakfasts, snacks with low glycemic loads, amino acid-rich lunches, and smart-fat dinners- getting your child off to the best start in life physically, mentally, and emotionally.” --Taken from the back cover.

I would like to thank all of the parents who have supported me this year. I really could not have done it without you! From all of the great snack to the self acts of volunteering time for field trips, art, IMAGINE conferences, to the little things that I need help to complete in order for this classroom and school to run smoothly. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
